Your Painting Tuition on Alonissos
As featured in Sunvil Specialist Greece 2009
Welcoming complete beginners or more skilled artists, I will show you my own style and techniques of painting and help you develop and improve your drawing and the application of your watercolour paint. You will achieve in a relatively short time, results you will be more than satisfied with. Having first taught painting on the island over 20 years ago and now owning a house there, I have a great affinity with Alonissos and will enjoy sharing my knowledge and experience with you during your holiday.

The first mornings tuition is normally on Sunday, after your Friday arrival, giving you time to settle in. This will be at my home and studio near Patitiri, where we can go through ideas for the week ahead. I will give a demonstration of my own painting style and discuss your requirements for the following week. Non painting partners who wish to can take a short guided walk with my wife Jane during this session and then join the painters for a leisurely lunch, which is provided free of charge on the first day.

The rest of the weeks itinerary is flexible but we will endeavor to explore as much of the island as possible, to accommodate differing painting styles. We will probably spend at least one morning exploring the picturesque old town of Alonissos with its picture postcard windows, doorways and alleyways, then maybe a working harbour, spectacular cliffs tops or one of the many idyllic bays with seafront tavernas.

Cost of Tuition
1 weeks painting tuition is £195 (250€) per person and consists of 5 morning sessions of 3and a half hours each usually from 10am until 1.30pm

Additional sessions cost 50€ each
Discounts can apply to group bookings of 4 or more
Some local transport costs will be incurred - no more than 35€ per person per week

With approximately 3 and a half hours per day allocated to tuition time you have the rest of the day to continue painting or you can relax, explore and become bewitched by this beautiful island. Non-painting partners will find plenty to do including Scuba Diving, Homeopathy, The Alexander Technique, Yoga and Walking.
During the cooler months which are normally May and September Chris's wife Jane can provide a guided walk or two for non painting partners, these are organised to tie in with painting classes, with painters and walkers meeting up in time for lunch, usually at one of the beach tavernas.

About Alonissos

Alonissos, third in line after Skiathos and Skopolos (Mama Mia fame!) is the quietest inhabited island in the group known as the Sporades. It offers many small quiet beaches with crystal clear waters, natural sleepy harbours with colourful fishing boats, and a rugged natural landscape with spectacular views. The island is a perfect location for a painting holiday. Although certainly not flat - there is tremendous variety from mountainous wooded slopes, a hilltop village, unspoilt ancient houses, wonderful seascape vistas, traditional working harbours and wildflower and fauna to make you want to return again and again.

Getting to Alonissos

Most people fly to Skiathos the nearest airport, then after a short taxi ride to the port catch a Ferry or Hydrofoil to Alonissos (approx 1 and a half hours).
You can book your flights, accomodation and sea transfers independently if you wish although we have found that using a tour operator is often easier and more economical. A list of websites is provided on myuseful links page but should you require any further infomation please email janechris.hughes@tesco.net

Booking Your Holiday

Travelling with a Tour Operator such as Sunvil, Olympic, Thomas Cook, First Choice or Manos is often preferable and can be more economic and there representatives will be on hand to guide through the forward transfers to Alonissos once you have arrived on Skiathos. Once you have selected and booked your holiday email me to reserve your painting tuition.
The Sunvil Specialist Greece brochure features my painting tuition in their holidays on Alonissos section.

Please email your arrival times so that we can
welcome you as you arrive on Alonissos.

A bit about me...

I left Swansea University in the 1970's and trained as a ceramic artist at Royal Worcester Porcelain. After becoming one of their leading painters I turned freelance in 1980. Since then my watercolours, oils and ceramics have sold to galleries and collectors in the UK, Japan, USA, Australia, the Middle East and Europe.
Together with my wife Jane, I am now lucky enough to spend the summer months painting and holding watercolour painting courses from our house on the Greek Island of Alonissos. I first Whilst there I work in watercolour and oils as I attempt to capture the wonderful colours and light of the Aegean.
We return each Autumn to our UK home to catch up with family and friends and of course continue painting.

Alonissos is the most perfect place to relax and paint. Chris teaches his technique with patience, humour and generousity; he gave me the confidence to develop a style of painting I can enjoy and develop. Diana
